On questioning the hospital assistant the following history was elicited:?Ten days ago, Bowani Singh suffered from retention of urine which was relieved by a warm bath and an opiate, previous to the administration of which, an attempt at passing a catheter had been made unsuccessfully, and which was followed by the escape of a large amount of blood from the urethra. The patient complained of nothing further until the evening of the 4th November, when symptoms of retention again declared themselves, and the hospital assistant again attempted the passage of catheter No. 3. This was unsuccessful, and again a large quantity of blood escaped on withdrawal of the instrument. The patient being still unable to pass water, the hospital assistant
